Is there anything better than finding a series that your kids absolutely love? And when the next book comes out, it’s like Christmas morning all over again. I find that my kids almost always get obsessed with fantasy novels, which is great since they’re usually published in a series. And since the second (or third or fourth) books in a series don’t get nearly as much attention as the first, I decided to create this roundup of highly readable fantasy sequels for kids ages 9-12.
Whether your kid has been waiting for a short time or several years for the next book in their favorite series, here are some of the most anticipated fantasy sequels for kids.

The Most Anticipated Fantasy Sequels for Kids
Charlie Hernandez and the Castle of Bones (Charlie Hernandez #2) by Ryan Calejo
Kids that enjoyed Percy Jackson will love this series that tackles Latin mythology. This is the second fast-paced novel in the series, and it is quickly becoming one of my daughter’s favorite series. She devoured the first book when it came out and gobbled this one up too. Of course, if your child hasn’t read the first book yet, have them start with that one: Charlie Hernandez and the League of Shadows.

Champion of the Titan Games (Dragonwatch #4) by Brandon Dorman
Speaking of fast-paced fantasy sequels for kids, this is another series my daughter can’t get enough of. This is the fourth book in the follow-up series to Fablehaven, and it’s everything your fantasy-living kid could hope for. If they’ve never read Fablehaven or Dragonwatch, get them both series for their birthday or Christmas and watch them become obsessed with one of the best fantasy series written in their lifetime.

Kenny and the Book of Beasts (Kenny and the Dragon #2) by Toni DiTerlizzi
This is a fantasy sequel that I’ve been waiting for for a long time. I read the first book to my oldest daughter when she was four years old, and I was thrilled when I found out about the sequel. It was a long wait, but it was worth it. This series is great for the younger set, so if your kids are in the 7-10 age range and like books about friendship and courage, snag a copy of Kenny and the Dragon and Kenny and the Book of Beasts.

Escaping Ordinary (Talespinners #2) by Scott Reintgen
Kids that love stories and fairy tales will fall in love with this magical series. It’s about a book character who gets sidelined and has to work her way into the story’s spotlight. It’s imaginative and fun. This is the second book in the Talespinners series and an awesome sequel. If you’re new to this story, start with the first book, Saving Fable.

The Torchbearers (The Darkdeep #3) by Ally Condie and Brendan Reich
Have your kids become obsessed with this series yet? If they like spooky books with loads of adventure, friendship, and monsters, they need this series! I read all three books to my daughter, and she loved every page. It’s like The Goonies meets Stranger Things, and it’s just as fun as it sounds.
The Last Kids on Earth and the Skeleton Road (The Last Kids on Earth #6) by Max Brallier, illustrated by Douglas Holgate
My kids have been watching the Netflix animated series that was adapted from these books. The books are heavily illustrated and massively popular. My kids impatiently wait for each installment. If your reader likes zombies, action, and laugh-out-loud humor, this is their next best read. Honestly, fantasy sequels don’t get much better than this series!
A Tale of Witchcraft (A Tale of Magic #2) by Chris Colfer
Chris Colfer has made a name for himself in the world of children’s fantasy novels. Who knew that the kid from the TV series Glee would write so many popular books for kids? A Tale of Witchcraft is the second book in his new series called A Tale of Magic. Kids that enjoyed the author’s first series, The Land of Stories, will have a blast reading these books.
The Magic Misfits: The Fourth Suit by Neil Patrick Harris
Speaking of celebrity authors, Neil Patrick Harris (yes, THAT Neil Patrick Harris) has created a wildly popular realistic fantasy series that kids go nuts over. This is the fourth and final book in the bestselling Magic Misfits series, and believe me, kids won’t want to miss it. It’s about a group of misfit magicians who take down bad guys, uncover secrets, and put on amazing magic shows.
The Shadow Crosser (A Storm Runner Novel Book 3) by J.C. Cervantes
Out of all the books published by Rick Riordan Presents, this series is my favorite. It’s about a boy named Zane who has run-ins with ancient Mayan gods, monsters, and heroes. This book concludes the trilogy, and fans of the series have been anxiously waiting for publication day. The wait is finally over! If your child loves Percy Jackson and hasn’t read this series yet, now is an excellent time to dive in.
Dragon Fury (The Unwanteds Quest #7) by Lisa McMann
Have you discovered The Unwanteds series yet? It’s described as Harry Potter meets The Hunger Games, and that’s a pretty good comparison. My daughter eagerly awaits each new book that comes out in this series and devours them within days. This particular book is the newest installment in the spin-off series, The Unwanteds Quests. If your reader likes to obsess over super long series, keep this one on your radar. It’s fantastic!
The Fallen Queen (Titans #3) by Kate O’Hearn
This is another series for Percy Jackson fans. From the author of the beloved Pegasus books, this series is about a group of friends who battle monsters and challenge gods. In this book, Astraea, Zephyr, Pegasus, and Tryn struggle to stay out of some deadly monster’s clutches while trying to rescue their kidnapped friends. Kids that like mystery, magic, monsters, and mythology will love this series!
Soul Riders: The Legend Awakens (Star Stable #2) by Helena Dahlgren
Horse lovers have eagerly anticipated this fast-paced fantasy sequel starring a group of friends and their horses. With magic, friendship, and a quest to save the world, it’s no wonder kids love this modern fantasy series! If your kid can’t get enough of Spirit Riding Free on Netflix, this book is a must-read. Make sure you have them start with the first book, Soul Riders: Jorvik Calling.
The Tower of Nero (Trials of Apollo #5) by Rick Riordan
I can’t say enough good things about this series. Rick Riordan is a wildly popular author, and every book he writes is highly anticipated. The Trials of Apollo series is an Amazon Teacher’s Pick, and this novel wraps up the story. Not only does this book conclude The Trials of Apollo series, but the entire Percy Jackson saga. If you have a reader who loves fast-paced action, adventure, humor, and mythology, they need this book. Of course, if they haven’t read the rest of the series yet, start at the beginning with The Hidden Oracle.
Epoca: The River of Sand (Epoca #2) by Kobe Bryant and Ivy Claire
One of the things I like about this series is the intersection of fantasy and sports. I’ve always thought there should be more stories about sports, and I’m happy that the late basketball legend Kobe Bryant thought so too. If your young reader loves sports and competition, they’ll love the second book in the Epoca series. With sports, magic, teamwork, leadership, and friendship drama, this story is perfect for middle schoolers.
Tristan Strong Destroys the World (Tristan Strong #2) by Kwame Mbalia
The first book in this series, Tristan Strong Punches a Hole in the Sky, knocked my socks off, and the sequel is just as incredible. Kids who like action, adventure, folk heroes, African gods, magic, and mysterious villains won’t be able to set this book down. They’ll be begging for the next book as soon as they’re finished.
Hollowpox: The Hunt for Morrigan Crow (Nevermoor #3) by Jessica Townsend
My oldest daughter just started reading the Nevermoor series. She made it through the first two books in just a couple of days and is now asking for the third. If you’ve never heard of this series before, then you’re in for a treat. They’re full of magic, mischief, alternate dimensions, prophecies, and destiny. And the story takes place in this incredible hotel that is as alive as Hogwarts. You’ll love these books as much as your kids do.
The Dark Secret (Wings of Fire Graphic Novel #4) by Tui T. Sutherland
Have your kids found this series yet? When my girls discovered the Wings of Fire novels, they devoured them like candy. Then they stumbled across the graphic novels, and their love for this story went to a whole new level. If there are any fantasy sequels on this list that my kids have been itching to get, it’s this one.
Minecraft: The Shipwreck (Official Minecraft Novels #6) by C.B. Lee
My kids obsess over Minecraft. They love playing the game, learning tricks, and even reading novels set in the world of Minecraft. It may sound bizarre, but kids love these books. Without a doubt, Minecraft novels are some of the most anticipated fantasy sequels for kids.
