Is there anything better than a hug? I don’t think so. Hugs are the best. I’ve teamed up with Two Lions Press to bring you this blog post about Bird Hugs, a cute picture book by Ged Adamson. Keep reading to download a printable poster about hugs and learn more about the book!
Bird Hugs is such a sweet book. Bernard the bird can’t fly. His wings are too long and unwieldy. At first, it’s not a big deal since he can walk around and there are plenty of other birds around to keep him company. But when all the other birds fly away, Bernard is left alone. He tries to fly, but he can’t do it. He tries to find another use for his wings, but they’re always in the way. Just when he is about to give up for good, Bernard meets a sad orangutan and gives him a hug. That’s when Bernard realizes his wings might be useful after all. From then on, he spends his days hugging the other animals and making them feel good.
Hugs are powerful. They are comforting and sweet and warm. There are all sorts of scientific reasons that hugs feel so wonderful, but all you really need to know is that they feel good. This delightful picture book celebrates the power of a hug and the joy it can bring to both the giver and the recipient.
A second theme runs through this book as well: everyone has something to offer. I love the message that even if you’re different and strange, you have a gift inside of you that can make the world a better place. This is a lovely book for children (and parents) to read. It will encourage you to give a hug to someone every day — especially the people you care about!
And look at how adorable this artwork is! I love the colors and style. There are no two ways about it — this is a delightful book!
About the Book
Bird Hugs by Ged Adamson
Bernard isn’t like other birds. His wings are impossibly long, and try as he might, he just can’t seem to fly. He’s left wondering what his wings are good for…if they’re even good for anything at all. But a chance encounter with a dejected orangutan leads Bernard to a surprising discovery: that maybe what makes him different is actually something to be embraced.
