A few years ago, I discovered YA mystery books and teenage thrillers. I loved reading about young amateur sleuths and the murder mysteries they solved so much that I devoured oodles of them. In case you’re as obsessed with young adult mystery books as I am, I created this reading list.
The great thing about YA mystery books is that the stories are more intense than you’ll find in middle grade mysteries, but not as dark as what you get in an adult novel. Since I prefer amateur detective stories anyway, high school mystery novels strike the right cord for me. And they probably will for you as well.
So if you’re looking for some teenage thriller books and YA mystery books to read this year, you’re in the right place.
Grab your favorite drink and a stack of these YA thrillers and find somewhere comfortable to read. Once you get started on these novels, you won’t want to stop!
*I’ve added content information to the books I’ve already read.

5 years agoI love mystery/thrillers, but adult ones sometimes give me nightmares with all the graphic violence, sex, etc., so THANK YOU for this list of milder ones. I especially appreciate the content warnings. I can’t wait to dive into some of these!

5 years ago AUTHORRight? I get nightmares from adult ones sometimes too. YA is the sweet spot of intense but not too intense. Glad you found some new books to read. Enjoy!

5 years agoGreat list! I’m at a full primary so going up to age 12/13 and our kids love murder mystery. I appreciate your review notes regarding swearing and sexual content and it seems none of these would be over the top for us, I am ok with the odd f bomb and kissing. I will generally read borderline books before I buy them anyway, but are there any you would rule out before I start on this list! My summer reading list is already pretty long!

5 years ago AUTHORI loved all the books on this list. If you want something appropriate for lower YA (ages 12-14), then Holding Court and Gilt Hollow are fantastic! I also really liked the Karen M. McManus books. She has another one coming out soon too. Happy reading!
