How to Draw a Cute Baby Hippo Step-by-Step

To celebrate the release of Fiona the Hippo by Richard Cowdrey, I created this step-by-step tutorial on how to draw a cute baby hippo!

What you need:

*Draw lightly with the pencil. You want to be able to erase your pencil marks during the final step of the tutorial. Don’t press too hard or you’ll create pencil marks that are impossible to erase.

  1. Using a pencil, draw simple shapes for the body and head.
  2. Add the back feet, front legs, and ears to your hippo.
  3. Draw in your hippo’s facial features: eyes, nostrils, mouth, and a tuft of hair.
  4. Using a permanent marker or pen, go over your drawing to make it stand out. Add in any extra little details you want during this step.
  5. Using a kneaded eraser (or a regular eraser), erase your pencil drawing. Your permanent ink will stay.
  6. Check over your drawing and fix up any lines that may have faded during step 5. You’re all done!
