Brrrr! Picture Books About Winter to Snuggle Up With

Cold weather gets me thinking about mugs of hot chocolate, a fire, and fuzzy socks. But one of my favorite things about this time of year is snuggling under a blanket with my kids and reading a stack of picture books about winter.

Like most kids, mine have their favorite picture books about winter that we read every year. I created this reading list with those titles in mind. From funny snowman stories to gorgeous books of prose, these are some of the best children’s books about winter on our shelves.

While I’ve read a LOT of winter read-alouds to my kids, I haven’t read them all, so please leave me your recommendations in the comments so I can check them out.

Fantastic Picture Books About Winter

Winter Dance by Marion Dane Bauer, illustrated by Richard Jones

As winter gets closer, Fox is wondering what he should do. He gets advice from other animals, but none of it is right for him until he meets another fox. Together, the two foxes dance with the falling snow.

It’s a quiet reminder that not all people/animals are the same, but there’s a potential friend out there for everyone if you’re willing to look for them.

Mice Skating by Annie Silvestro, illustrated by Teagan White

The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats

There’s a good reason this book has become a modern classic. It’s beautiful. From the cut-paper illustrations to the urban setting to the quiet story of a boy enjoying a day in the snow.

You’d think that after so many years, a book would lose its charm, but this one has stood the test of time. My toddler loves it and it’s a must-have for your stack of winter books.

No Yeti Yet by Mary Ann Fraser

Can you find the yeti in this adorable picture book? Humor, adventure, and searching for the hidden yeti on each page make No Yeti Yet a delight to read with kids.

Two little boys decide to go on a yeti hunt. Along the way, they discuss what a yeti looks like, smells like, and sounds like, but meeting a real yeti is a much different experience than either of them anticipated.

This book is super cute and is a wintertime reading staple in my house. I can’t even count how many times I’ve read this to my kids!

The Thing About Yetis by Vin Vogel

Yetis love winter, that’s a fact. But the thing is, sometimes even yetis get tired of being cold.

On those days when you just can’t get warm and you’re itching for spring to arrive, read this adorable winter read aloud with your kids. Besides having the cutest illustrations on the planet, it’s a beautifully written story about a young yeti dreaming of spring.

100 Snowmen by Jen Arena

If the illustrations don’t sell you on this book, nothing will. The pictures are full of goofy, hilarious snowmen performing various acts of tomfoolery and shenanigans.

Other than being a laugh-out-loud picture book, it’s also an interesting counting book. Each page adds up the snowmen in the picture until it gets to ten, then starts counting down again. When you add up all the snowmen in this book, you’ll find that there are exactly 100 of them.

It’s super cute and a ton of fun to read. Add this one to your stack of children’s books about winter!

Snowmen at Night by Caralyn Buehner, illustrated by Mark Buehner

And speaking of hilarious snowmen. We can’t leave this one off our list of picture books about winter!

I read this book several years ago and instantly fell in love with it. An alternate title could be The Secret Life of Snowmen.

Haven’t you always wanted to know what snowmen do at night when you’re not watching? I know I sure have. This goofy winter picture book gives kids a peek into the shenanigans that snowmen get up to when there’s nobody around to see. Adorable and utterly charming, this is one of those winter read-alouds that everyone needs on their shelf!
