My kids always love bedtime because that’s when we read as many adorable bedtime books as we have time for. My older girls have moved on to novels, but when they were preschoolers, I let them make a big stack of books for us to read together every night. Even now, I let my toddler pick out a mountain of bedtime books.

We don’t always make it through the entire stack, but we read a LOT of books before turning out the lights. Here are some of our favorite bedtime books for preschoolers.

Best Bedtime Books for Preschoolers

The Bedtime Book by Mary EngelbreitThe Bedtime Book by Mary Engelbreit

The title says it all. This is a collection of prayers, poems, and nursery rhymes. Like all of Mary Engelbreit’s books, it has a warm, comforting feel throughout. Some of the poems are sweet, some are funny, and some warm you from the inside out. This is a wonderful bedtime book to read with your child if you’re looking for something with a religious element to it.

The Snatchabook by Helen Docherty, illustrated by Thomas DochertyThe Snatchabook by Helen Docherty, illustrated by Thomas Docherty

My kids have loved this book since it was first published. My two-year-old is currently obsessed with it and makes me read it to her every night. A snatchabook is stealing all the books in Burrow Down and a little rabbit decides to catch the elusive thief. It’s super cute and an adorable book about books for young readers.

Franklin in the Dark by Paulette Bougeios and Brenda ClarkFranklin in the Dark by Paulette Bourgeois and Brenda Clark

My mom used to read this book to me as a kid. She could never figure out why I was wearing a snowsuit to bed until she connected the dots between the book and my obsessive snowsuit habit. In my defense, I was a little kid in Canada. It shouldn’t really surprise you that the animal I identified with was the polar bear in the story.

I started reading this to my own kids when my mom gave me her old copy. It’s still as cute and funny as it was when I was little. Snowsuits aren’t a thing in North Carolina, so I don’t have to worry about my kids sleeping in them, but they sure like the book.

Bedtime for Yeti by Vin VogelBedtime for Yeti by Vin Vogel

What’s bedtime without your stuffed friend? It’s a terrifying disaster, is what it is.

This little book is so cute. I love both of the Yeti books and my daughter does, too. We read this one at bedtime while snuggling with stuffed toys and pointing out all the cute things in the pictures. It’s adorable and perfect for bedtime.

Milk and Cookies by Frank AschCookies and Milk by Frank Asch

Baby Bear thinks there’s a dragon in the basement. When the dragon comes upstairs, he eats up all the milk and cookies, leaving nothing for Baby Bear. Good thing it was all a dream!

My daughter got this book out of her Little Fun Club subscription and now it’s one of our bedtime staples. It’s an older story, but the story is timeless.

Uni the Unicorn by Amy Krouse Rosenthal, illustrated by Brigette BarragerUni the Unicorn by Amy Krouse Rosenthal, illustrated by Brigette Barrager

Sometimes the best bedtime books are just really good books. This is a unique twist on the whole “make-believe” theme. Uni believes that little girls are real, in spite of her friends’ teasing and her parents patronizing her. It’s such a sweet book and the artwork is gorgeous. If you have a little girl, this book should absolutely be in your bedtime book stack.

Gator Dad by Brian LiesGator Dad by Brian Lies

Gator Dad is a look at the special bond between a father and his kids. I am so happy to see more books like this on the market. Dads have often been overlooked in the world of children’s books, and it’s wonderful to see them depicted as the involved, loving parents they are. This particular book has become a favorite for my girls. They love their dad and have enjoyed reading a book that celebrates that unique connection only a dad can bring.
