10 Children’s Books to Read Aloud

I’m always on the lookout for new children’s books to read aloud. Reading picture books to my kids is one of the greatest pleasures in my life. It fills my heart up to overflowing with happiness. Sometimes I wish my toddler would never get any bigger so that we could snuggle and read together forever.

I get so many books in the mail from publishers that I thought I would compile them into one blog post instead of a bunch of individual posts. Book lists are more fun, anyway.

The Thing About Yetis by Vin Vogel

This book is so cute! It’s the perfect book to read if you and your kids are starting to get tired of winter, tired of being cold.

Yetis love winter and they love the cold, but winter can be too long, even for them.

I love the illustrations in this book. I’ve read The Thing About Yetis a few times to my kids. They like how Yeti does similar activities in winter and summer, like building snow castles vs sand castles.

I would recommend this book to kids that like the snow but are ready for summer.

Our Dog, Benji by Pete Carter, illustrated by James Henderson

This story is all about a dog who loves food and will do anything to get it. Benji eats everything from olives and apples to grass and bugs. He also enjoys visiting neighbors and looking for food in strange places. His owner isn’t so adventurous, but Benji’s eclectic eating habits encourage him to try new foods.

There are quite a few picture books out there about picky eating, but this is one of the cuter ones I’ve read. I really like how the story is all about the eating and social habits of a dog. It’s told by a child who remains off-page throughout the entire book, which gives it a fun, mysterious quality that I really enjoyed.

I read this to my kids and they liked it too.

The muted colors give the artwork an old-fashioned feel.

That’s Me Loving You by Amy Krouse Rosenthal, illustrated by Teagan White

This book is as sweet as sugar. It compares a parent’s love for their child to the beauty of nature — wind, sun, rainbows, etc. Of course, Teagan White’s illustrations didn’t hurt anything either. Her sweet, heartwarming illustrations make you want to snuggle up with a blanket and read the book over and over again.

I have several books that White has illustrated and they’re some of my favorites. She truly has a gift for creating whimsical, beautiful artwork.

This is a wonderful book to read when you want to feel close to your little one. It’s a great book to add to your bedtime routine or with some snuggles just before naptime.

The Gingerbread Man Loose at the Zoo by Laura Murray, illustrated by Mike Lowery

I can’t believe I’ve never read any of the Gingerbread Man books before. This is my first one.

The gingerbread man goes with his school class to the zoo, where he promptly gets lost. This romp through the zoo is written in first person rhyme, which kids love when it’s done well (and this one is!).

I read this book with my kids and they loved how the gingerbread man had to keep escaping from animals that wanted to eat him.

Gingerbread Man Loose at the Zoo is a fun adventure that kids in the 4-7 age bracket will enjoy. Kids that are already fans of the gingerbread man and his adventures will not be disappointed in this book.

It’s light and sweet and silly and a fun book to read aloud with a group.

A Letter to My Teacher by Deborah Hopkinson, illustrated by Nancy Carpenter

This is such a sweet book. It’s about a young girl who has a difficult time adjusting to second grade. She challenges her teacher constantly, who is always patient and kind. Through the teacher’s guidance and kindness, the girl adjusts to school and gains an appreciation for learning.

This is a beautiful story that portrays the impact a good teacher can have on a child. It’s an inspiring thank you to all the teachers out there that give their time and energy to the kids they teach.

The Bot that Scott Built by Kim Norman, illustrated by Agnese Baruzzi

In spite of what the cover would have you think, the book is not about Scott building a bot. Rather, Scott’s bot (already built) is a curiosity at the science fair and causes a domino effect that escalates until Scott steps in and saves the day with his bot.

The Bot that Scott Built is written in easy to read rhyme. The bright, fun illustrations give the book a stylized feel. This is a good book that will appeal to kids that like robots, chaos, and fun stories.

Dance with Me by Penny Harrison, illustrated by Gwynneth Jones

This sweet story reminded me of the movie Toy Story. It’s about a music box ballerina that loves to dance. But when the little girl who owns the music box grows up, the ballerina doesn’t know if or when she’ll be able to dance again. This is a story about nostalgia and the items that possess our memories.

My First Book of Hockey by Sports Illustrated for Kids

Perfect for young hockey fans, My First Book of Hockey describes the game and the rules. There’s a mix of photos and illustrations in the book. They’re funny and informative, which is perfect for little kids. I would recommend this book to preschoolers and even lower grade school age kids.

My husband is actually the one that enjoyed this book the most. Even though I’m Canadian, I’m a horrible sports fan. I pretend to be a Calgary Flames fan, but I almost never watch their games. Anyway, my husband read the book and said it was exactly the kind of book he loved as a kid. It’s funny, makes a great read aloud, and it’s about a topic he loves — hockey!

The Great Sock Secret by Susan Whelan, illustrated by Gwynneth Jones

When Sarah’s mom says they need to go hunting for all their missing socks, Sarah gets nervous. Fairies use the missing socks for everything from potato sack races to bath towels.
This book is cute. My kids love pointing out all the fairies on the page going unnoticed by Sarah’s mom. If you’ve ever wondered why socks have a knack for disappearing, this book answers that question.

The Fix it Man by Dimity Powell, illustrated by Nicky Johnston

This book is so sad, but it also has themes of hope and recovery after grief. A young girl admires her father’s ability to fix everything. The only thing he isn’t able to fix is her sick mother. A heartwrenching story packed into picture book format, this book will resonate with children who have lost loved ones. A good read aloud about dealing with trials and clinging to your family when the going gets rough.
