The tastiest holiday of the year is coming up — Thanksgiving! I love the food, the decorations, and the fun times at Thanksgiving. It’s a yummy tradition that I love for many reasons — a weekend off school/work, apple pie, turkey, and sweet potatoes. Surprisingly, there aren’t many books about Thanksgiving, but I went on a hunt to find the best ones and managed to find some great ones. So if you’re looking for some books about Thanksgiving to read to your kids, here are some that we’ve enjoyed.
A Plump and Perky Turkey by Teresa Bateman
In a desperate attempt to have a decent Thanksgiving dinner, the people of Squawk Valley hatch a plan to lure a turkey in, but nobody expects the bird to outwit them! /this rhyming book is a blast to read with kids this time of year. The story is clever, funny, and will leave you smiling.

Sharing the Bread by Pat Zietlow Miller, illustrated by Jill McElmurry
This is another rhyming picture book that celebrates Thanksgiving traditions, food, and family. Each member of the family has a job to do and by working together, they create a wonderful meal that they can share. Read this book for a “warm and fuzzy” feeling.

Thank You Prayer by Josephine Page, illustrated by Caroline Jayne Church
For a spiritual spin on the holiday, read Thank You Prayer. A child thanks God for everything they’ve been given, including food, the world, and the birds. This lovely book is short, sweet, and perfect to read to even the youngest of children.

Bear Says Thanks by Karma Wilson, illustrated by Jane Chapman
I love the Bear series and this is no exception. Bear throws a big feast for all his friends, but when they all show up, Bear realizes that his cupboards are empty. This charming book celebrates friends, food, and gratitude.

But Percy soon learns that there might be more to Thanksgiving than just eating. With Teresa Murfin’s playful illustrations, this adorable book is a Thanksgiving must-read.
The Great Thanksgiving Escape by Mark Fearing
For a kid, Thanksgiving can be more of a torture chamber full of cheek-pinching relatives and pesky younger cousins. Gavin and Rhonda decide to make a break for the backyard, but first they must evade all the obstacles — like dogs, butts, and aunts — in their path. This hilarious book will get kids laughing about the holiday that they may or may not love as much as their parents.

9 years agoWe’ve read another one about Sarah Hale that we really like called, “Sarah Gives Thanks.” I need to read “Thank You, Sarah” and see how they compare.

9 years agoYou are so right about the lack of good Thanksgiving books, but this sounds like a great line-up. I recently bought Bear Says Thanks and read it to my daughter’s preschool friends. It was a hit. Now I want to get my hands on a copy of the Plump and Perky Turkey. Stopping by from the Kid Lit Blog Hop.
